Notes

Lucien Pallez (born 1853) produced allegorical figures and monuments in the neo-classical style, but also sculpted portraits of his contemporaries and the statue of Victor Hugo. France donated this monument to Rome in May 1905. The statue was to have been placed in Piazza Independenza as nearby streets commemorated the alliance between France and Italy but the statue in fact was positioned among the avenues and trees of Villa Borghese near the statue of Goethe.

Christie's charges a Buyer's premium calculated at 23.205% of the hammer price for each lot with a value up to €110,000.
