Item Overview

Description

Catharine Whyte 1906 - 1979 Canadian oil on canvas on board Mountain Landscape
10 x 13 1/4 inches 25.4 x 33.7 centimeters signed and on verso dated 1939
Provenance:Private Collection, Vancouver Catharine Whyte and her husband Peter were deeply interested in the arts, having met while studying at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1927. The couple moved to Banff in 1930, and it was then that her lifetime appreciation of the western Canadian mountains commenced. This attractive piece was executed in the earlier period of Whyte's career and epitomizes her painterly strengths - a rich use of color and a strong affection for the surrounding mountains. After her husband's death in 1966, Whyte focused her energy on philanthropy and founded the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in 1968. She remained involved in the museum until her death in 1979.
