The equine- and battlepainter Carl Adolph Heinrich Hess studied at the Dresden Academy under Ephr. Gottl. Krüger as well as Carl Chr. Klaß and initially focussed on history painting. Since 1790, however, his chief interest lay in equine painting, for which he soon became renowned and destinguished (a.o. with the prussian Golden Medal for Merit). In 1800 he received honorary membership of the Berlin Academy. During his residencies in Vienna (as member of the academy), Hungary, Russia, Turkey, England and Rome, he studied the different horse races and depicted numerous martial events in battle scenes. He spent the last years of his live in Schönbrunn. A large amount of his painterly and graphic works can be found in public collections, amongs others in Dresden and Frankfurt.
