Item Overview

Description

PHOTOGRAPHS - BESNYÖ-, Eva (attr.). Central Station Hamburg, circa 1949. Vintage print, with title 'Hamburg' and number '155-1/2' (on the reverse, visible through two peep holes at the back of the frame). Framed under passe-partout behind glass, image size 28 x 23 cm., frame size 48.5 x 42 cm. With paper label with printed text 'KSN-155 'Centraal station Hamburg Omstr. 1949 Edition 2 Size 23.2 x 28.5 cm.' mounted at the back of the frame.
Attributed earlier to Eva Besnyö (1910 - 2003), but we couldn't find any evidence. Besnyö was a Dutch-Hungarian photographer and photojournalist, involved in the New Photography movement, known for her distinctive portraits, landscapes, and architectural views. She was formed as an artist in Berlin, attracted to the city by its avant-garde flavour and flourishing modern art. Besnyö had to move to Amsterdam in 1932 because of the National-Socialism threat in Germany.
