PROVENANCE:

Bullock, a prominent lawyer, served as the Mayor of Richmond, Va. for two terms. He owned Jamestown Island and served on the committee to supervise the construction of the Governor's Mansion. The Massachusetts painter Cephas Thompson made annual trips to the South during the winter months to paint portraits. Thompson completed four portraits of Bullock. Research file containing Bullock family genealogy, correspondence with several historical and art agencies regarding Bullock and Thompson, and conservation report accompanies portrait
