Item Overview

Description

CHAMBERLAIN, Lieutenant Henry [?] (b. 1796). Views and Costumes of the City and Neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. London: printed for Thomas M'Lean by Howlett and Brimmer, Columbian Press, 1822.

2° (366 x 255mm). Address leaf, list of plates, 36 hand-coloured aquatint plates, including 5 folding panoramic views, by T. Hunt, G. Hunt, H. Alken, and John Clark after drawings by Chamberlain. (Light offsetting of a few plates onto text leaves, some light marginal surface soiling or spots occasionally touching sky areas, a few plates trimmed to platemark, one plate neatly restored to size.) 20th-century blue morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with original publisher's printed title slip pasted onto flyleaf.

AN EXTREMELY RARE, FINE FIRST EDITION of 'one of the most beautiful, and also one of the rarest, books published about Brazil in the nineteenth century' (Borba de Moraes). Identified by Tooley as 'the finest English colour plate book on Brazil', this work contains harbour views, landscapes, sociological and architectural scenes drawn by Chamberlain from 1819 to 1820, with accompanying descriptive text. Abbey identifies Chamberlain as 'probably Henry', the son of Sir Henry Chamberlain who held the posts of Consul-General and Chargé d'Affaires in Rio da Janeiro from 1815 to 1829. The work was originally issued in parts, and on completion was published in boards with a printed label, included here, showing its price at '£6. 6s. extra boards'. Abbey Travel 707; Borba de Moraes I, 178; Tooley 178.
