Lot 72: (Charles-)Am‚d‚e(-Philippe) van Loo (Rivoli 1719-1795 Paris)

NOTES The son of the painter Jean-Baptise van Loo, Am‚d‚e studied under his father and at the Acad‚mie Royale in Paris, where he was received as a full member in 1747. In 1748 he was appointed painter to Frederick the Great of Prussia for whose palaces he executed decorative schemes, including a School of Athens and a Sacrifice of Iphigenia at Sanssouci (1748 and 1749). Am‚d‚e was a prolific portraitist, his masterpiece being the portrait of King Frederick, exhibited in the Salon of 1769, and now in the collection of H.M. The Queen, Buckingham Palace.
