Notes

The tapestry in the background of this painting once hung in Charles Caryl Coleman's Roman studio. The same brocaded, Ottoman textile and the Salviati-style blue glass vase are depicted in the artist's Still Life with Peach Blossoms (1877, on loan to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan). The specific inspiration for the theme of the lute player came from Coleman's close friend Elihu Vedder (1836-1923), who painted the kindred Girl with a Lute (private collection) in 1866.

This work will be included in Adrienne Baxter Bell's forthcoming critical study and catalogue raisonné of Coleman's work.
