The present work depicts the bay at Camaret on the western coast of Brittany, and relates to Cottet's painting of the same title that was purchased by the French state in 1893 (coll. Musée d'Orsay, Paris). Cottet was a friend of Auguste Rodin, and was a member of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Engravers during Rodin's tenure as president. Rodin acquired a number of works by Cottet which are now in the collection of the Musée Rodin, Paris.
