Item Overview

Description

Charles CROS.
Study on the means of communication with the planets. Extract from the Cosmos of August 7, 14 and 21, 1869. Paris, at the offices of Cosmos and Gauthier-Villars, 1869.
Brochure in-8.
Original edition: offprint from the Cosmos magazine.
"I am going to expose a project whose realization is not close, I fear, because of the dazzling it produces in most men. Its strangeness is however only apparent, because the elements are absolutely scientific. It is a question of entering into communication with the planets neighbouring the earth,
Mars and Venus, by means of luminous transmissions."
The famous astronomer Camille Flammarion had invited Charles Cros to give a lecture on inter-astral communications at the Salle des Capucines in May 1869. This science fiction view is based on the idea of the plurality of inhabited worlds, defended by Flammarion at the time.
Rare autograph letter signed: to my friend Sidney Vigneau[x] as a token of my deep sympathy
Charles Cros
Writer and lawyer at the Court of Appeal of Paris born in 1839, Sidney Vigneaux is the author of two novels: Urraca, a novel of Parisian manners (Marpon et Flammarion, 1885) and Le Baron Jéhova (Dentu, 1886), an anti-Semitic novel contemporary to Drumont's La France juive. Pierre-André
Taguieff has recently shown the role of this novel as a source of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
Charles Cros's consignments are very rare on his scientific publications.
Small restorations on the edges of the cover and in the inner margin: the last letter of the dedicatee's name has not been preserved.
