Description

The Tambourine Player signed and dated 'E. Vernet Lecomte 1868' (lower left) oil on canvas 453/4 x 301/2 in. (116.2 x 77.5 cm.) Painted in 1868 PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 19 March 1986, lot 15. Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. EXHIBITION Paris, Salon, 1868, no. 1494. NOTES The famed painter of history, genre, portraits and murals studied under his uncle Horace Vernet as well as L‚on Cogniet. His Orientalist paintings most often depict a single figure capturing their personality and often functioning almost like a portrait. His debut at the Salon was in 1845 which won him the third place medal. Lecomte-Vernet was the artist for the mural decorations of the church of Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile as well as those at the Palais de Justice in Paris.
