CHARLES FERDINAND WIMAR (German/American, 1828-1862) Portrait of a Native American (Portrait of a Half Breed) Oil on canvas 10-1/4 x 8-1/4 inches (26.0 x 21.0 cm) LITERATURE: Rick Stewart et al, Carl Wimar, Chronicler of the Missouri River Frontier, Fort Worth, Texas, 1991, p. 238, as Study of an Indian Head. The present work is closely related to Studies for Portraits of Indians from the collection of Mrs. Wimar A. Becker, exhibited in Saint Louis, Missouri, City Art Museum, Charles Wimar 1828-1862, Painter of the American Frontier, October 13-November 18, 1946, no. 45, p. 47 (photograph in Frick Library artist's file, 124-2A [38886]), and a half-length portrait, signed C. Wimar, from the collection of Wimar's half brother (or step-brother) August H. Beck, by descent to his daughter Ida. C. Grant, also exhibited in Saint Louis, #23, illustrated.
