A partir de 1905, Filiger délaisse peu à peu l'esthétique de Pont-Aven, et s'attache à d'autres modes d'expression qui tirent leurs origines d'une sorte de réflexion méditative, voire parfois de mysticisme. Ces recherches donnent lieu à la série des Notations chromatiques que l'artiste va produire après 1900, dont l'oeuvre ci-présente. La complexité de son décor géométrique réalisé à la règle et au compas, la symbolique de la figure centrale - mi-homme, mi-lion - symbole de l'âme, la prédominance du jaune, couleur solaire et enfin l'abstraction vers laquelle Filiger se dirige, permettent de situer cette oeuvre parmi les dernières notations chromatiques réalisées par l'artiste.

Beginning in 1905, Filiger gradually abandoned the Pont-Aven aesthetic favouring a meditative, even mystical mode of expression. These studies resulted in his series Notations chromatiques the artist produced after 1900. The complexity of its geometric decor executed with a compass and ruler, the symbolic nature of the central subject - half man, half lion - the symbol of the spirit, the predominance of yellow, the colour of the sun, and finally the abstraction towards which Filiger turned to allows us to situate this painting among the artist's final Notations chromatiques.
