Cette aquarelle est une étude pour la gouache Madone aux vers luisants (intitulée ainsi par André Breton; collection privée) que Charles Filiger expose au premier Salon de la Rose+Croix au printemps 1892. Elle témoigne de la grande admiration de l'artiste pour les Primitifs italiens, et se range parmi les oeuvres à sujet religieux que ce dernier exécute principalement à cette époque. Elle sera offerte par Filiger à Marie Henry, la tenancière de l'auberge Les Grands Sables au Pouldu où le peintre séjourne en compagnie de Gauguin et Sérusier.

The present watercolour is a study for the gouache Madone aux vers luisants (titled as such by André Breton; private collection) that Charles Filiger presented at the first Salon de la Rose+Croix in the spring of 1892. It asserts the artist's strong admiration for the Italian Primitives and positions itself among the religious paintings he primarily produced at this time. Filiger offered it to Marie Henry, the owner of the The Great Sands Inn at Pouldu, where the painter stayed in the company of Gauguin and Sérusier.
