Item Overview

Description

CHARLES FREDERICK KIMBALL
Portland, Maine, 1831-1903

"Down From the Hills", a forest interior with stream. Signed lower right "F.K. 1875". Old index card attached to reverse notes title and artist history. Charles Frederick Kimball was a Maine landscape artist, an etcher, and an expert cabinetmaker. He studied with Charles O. Cole, John Bradley Hudson and John Greenleaf Cloudman. In 1863 he married Cloudman's daughter Annie, after which he worked with his family as a cabinetmaker and ceased professional painting, fearing commercialization of his work. Though his earlier work was reminiscent of the Hudson River School, in 1875 he was influenced by the French Barbizon School, and later by Impressionism. Kimball was one of the founders of the Portland Society of Art in 1882, and one of the group's early presidents.

Oil on canvas, 24" x 40". Framed.
