Description

Charles Haigh-Wood (British, 1856-1927) "Full-Length Portrait of a Young Girl in a Scarlet Dress with Lace Trim, Seated in a Garden Reading a Book" and "Full-Length Portrait of a Boy in a Burgundy Suit Holding a Cricket Ball", pair of oils on canvas, each 60-1-2" x 43", both examples signed and dated lower right "C. Haigh Wood 1883". Presented in matching deep giltwood and plaster frames in the neoclassical style with six moldings: the third register in Greek-key decor, the fifth in acanthine motifs, the sixth and outer molding of ribbon-bound leaves. Provenance: Private collection, Shreveport, Louisiana. Reference: Christopher Wood, Victorian Painters. Extremely gifted artistically, Charles Haigh-Wood was accepted to study art at The Royal Academy in London at the young age of seventeen. He went on to exhibit at the Academy four years later and was elected a member. He traveled to Italy to study the works of the Renaissance masters and returned after three years to open his own studio in England. His talent at painting attractive portraits of England's polite society brought in many lucrative commissions.
