Item Overview

Description

Grouse Shooting in a Highland landscape signed and dated 'C.H. Schwanfelder. 1832. Dec.' (lower left) oil on canvas 321/2 x 433/4 in. (82.6 x 111.1 cm.) NOTES Born at Leeds, the son of a painter of clocks and snuff boxes, Schwanfelder initially trained with his father but later specialised in sporting pictures (see also lot 32). He spent most of his working life in Yorkshire but also painted in Scotland and Wales. In 1814 he exhibited at the Royal Academy a portrait of the Prince Regent's Arab horse and this led to his appointment as Animal Painter to the Prince, a post later reconfirmed in 1820 when the Prince succeeded to the throne as George IV.
