Notes

Schwanfelder was born in Leeds, the son of a German house decorator and painter of clocks and snuff boxes. Although he remained based in Yorkshire for most of his life, he painted elsewhere and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1809-1818. In 1816 he was appointed Animal Painter to the Prince Regent, being reappointed in 1821 as Animal Painter to King George IV.
