Description

Charles Howard (1899-1978) Winter Painting Oil on canvas 91,5cm x 183cm Provenance: Kasmin Gallery, No. 39 Born in New Jersey, Howard studied at the University of California. Initially a mural painter, (Edward Wadsworth's designs in the de la Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, 1936) he exhibited with the British Surrealist Group at the first London Surrealist Exhibition of the same year. In 1939 having experienced continental travel and a period in Paris under the influence of Jean Helion, he settled in London and had a show of abstract pictures at Guggenheim Jeune Gallery. After an absence, Howard returned to Britain in 1946, was given a retrospective in 1956 at the Whitechapel Art Gallery becoming a British citizen in 1963.
