Notes

THE PROPERTY OF A DUTCH NOBLE FAMILY
Charles Howard Hodges took up pastels after becoming acquainted with Friedrich Tischbein (1750-1812), a protégé of the Stadholder's Court and made many pastel portraits here. Hodges worked in Tischbein's studio on Keizersgracht in Amsterdam in 1788. In the late 1780's and the early 1790's Tischbein's influence is plainly detectable while Hodges developed his unique own style, adding an elegant English accent to it.
