This picture is presumably either a study for or a reduced replica of the picture Lucy exhibited at the Royal Academy of 1859, no. 507. The
influence of Paul Delaroche is apparent, for Lucy studied under him at the École des Beaux-Arts, before settling at Barbizon, near
Fontainbleau. There he produced several subjects from English, and
especially Puritan, history. Many of his works were purchased for public institutions in America.
