Description

(possibly a member of the Paine Family), profile to the left, wearing top hat fixed with a fur crest and feather plume, his hair worn en queue painted on convex glass, rectangular papier-mâché frame, the reverse inscribed 'Patcham Place' (near Brighton) oval, 73mm. (2 7/8in.) high Footnote: A Captain John Paine of the Sussex Militia is listed in the 'Militia Lists' of 1814 (having attained that rank on 5 April 1807). There is also a Quarter Master John Paine, who attained that rank in the Devon Militia (North) on 3 August 1803.
