After his ordination John Moore was tutor to the 3rd Duke of Marlborough's sons, a patronage that was to later help his career. After the death of his first wife, he married Catherine, daughter of Sir Robert Eden Bart., a match that brought him into the circle of a highly political family. Moore became Dean of Canterbury at the request of the 4th Duke of Marlborough, but resigned after less than 4 years to become Bishop of Bangor. In 1783 he became Archbishop of Canterbury.
His primacy was steady and cautious, focussing on the defence of the establishment.
Throughout his primacy Moore's administrative competence, astute patronage, and impeccable orthodoxy made him many friends and few enemies. His relationship with the royal family was cordial and he married the Prince of Wales to Princess Caroline of Brunswick in 1795.
He died at Lambeth Palace on 18 January 1805 after some months of senility, and he was buried in Lambeth church on 25 January after a ceremonial funeral.
