Item Overview

Description

A silhouette of a Nobleman, probably Frederick Duke of York and Albany (1739-67), seated in a Bath chair, wearing the Order of the Garter and raising his hat
painted on convex glass backed with plaster
, signed on the reverse C Rosenberg/ 14 The Grove/ Bath, papier-mâché frame
Rectangular, 90mm. (3 1/2ins.) high

Notes

The present profile compares well with the profile of Frederick Duke of York taken by Crowhurst of Brighton circa 1827 in the National Portrait Gallery, London (no.1691a) (cf. R. Walker, Regency Portraits, vol.II, no.491). Rosenberg had close ties with the Royal family, having come to England as a page to Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Streliz (later Queen Charlotte). This relationship would have put him in a position to take the present somewhat 'informal' portrait of the Duke.
