Provenance: Collection of the Artist, New York Acquired directly from the above by the present ownerCharles Schucker was an early exponent of the stain and pouring techniques most prominently popularized by Helen Frankenthaler and Schucker's good friend and art-school classmate, Morris Louis. Differing from many of his contemporaries, Schucker had an intense preparatory process, which might include pencil drawings, paper cutouts, and even a pulley system to tilt large canvases. A long-time professor at the Pratt Institute, Schucker was quite well regarded during his six-decade career, with work included in numerous exhibitions at major American institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In addition to a lauded solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1971, Schucker received numerous awards in his lifetime and his documents are in The Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian.
