Important for Van Wijk's development was his stay in Brussels (1896-1897) and his contact with the Belgian sculptor Constantin Meunier (1831-1905). Hardworking labourers fascinated both. Where Meunier's fascination had a political background, Van Wijk admired the beauty of working people. After his return to The Hague in 1897, the theme of daily life of the farmer and his family will dominate Van Wijk's work. The figure of the man with the scythe is most probably executed during a stay in Brabant where he seeks inspiration. (H.
