Item Overview

Description

CHARLES WILDE (1855/6-1905) TRENT LOCK; THE GRANTHAM CANAL a pair, both signed, 30 x 45cm (2) The Nottingham artist Charles Wilde was the grandson of the keeper of Trent Lock, near Trent Bridge. A frequent guest at their lock keeper's cottage was the artist Henry Dawson (1811-1878). Charles Wilde first exhibited his paintings in 1879 and in the 1880s is recorded at several addresses in Beeston. A reference in the catalogue of the 'Trentside' Exhibition (University of Nottingham) describes the Wilde's home at Trent Lock as having been "termed the shrine of painters of some of the most beautiful pictures in the English landscape school." Wilde's father, William junior (1826-1901) was also a talented amateur painter. Mellors & Kirk is very grateful for the assistance of Mr Ken Brand in the cataloguing of this lot.
