He first Exhibited: at the RA in 1872. While his brother William established a strong reputation as a marine painter and etcher, Charles' output was more diverse; as well as river and coastal scenes, he painted narrative and landscape works such as The Old Mill, Boulogne, France, (Russel-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth), and The Sirens (Hartlepool Museums and Heritage Service). Examples of his work are held in the collections of the National Maritime Museum and the Tate.
