The influence of Jones' painting master, Richard Cosway (1742-1821) is clear in the present lot. It is known that she copied work by Cosway (examples include the portrait of Princess Charlotte at Windsor Castle dated 1799 and her portrait of Mrs. Fitzherbert in the Holburne Museum, Bath). Although it has not been possible to establish a direct link between the present lot and a specific work by Cosway, he was one of few miniaturists to include mythological subjects in his repertoire and the present lot has possibly been taken from one of his drawings.
