Notes

The story of Leda and the swan is depicted in countless works of art. As in the oldest one that has been preserved, the tile mosaic from the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, Palea Paphos (Cyprus), we see Leda from behind, looking at the swan. The story is a reoccurring subject in the oeuvre of Charlotte Mutsaers. Shortly after completing this painting, in 1987, she illustrated the book 'Kom met een gesis van vleugels' with ten poems on the subject, edited by Jan Gielkens & Pauline Tonkens. In her own poem for the bundle Charlotte Mutsaers pleads against romanticising of the rape story: Leda en de zwaan Het gaat niet om Leda. Witte nachten. Het wit in de poëzie. Het wit in het beeld. Wit picturaal en poëtisch zout.
