Primarily a sculptor, the young Chintamoni Kar studied painting at the Indian Society of Oriental Art from 1930-31 under Kshitindra Majumdar, the noted Bengal School painter who was himself a student of Abanindranath Tagore. Sakuntala reflects the elegant style of the Bengal School and Kar's Bengali signature in vertical format references Rabindranath Tagore's statement that:
"[...] the modern art movement, following the line of the oriental tradition, was started by my nephew Abanindranath [...]."
