Notes

This drawing, and the following lot, are sheets from a pictorial 'diary', in which Christiaan Andriessen made regular dated and annotated sketches between 1 January 1805 and the end of 1808. With the exception of the first drawing he made in each year (on 1 January 1805, 1806 and 1807, and 6 January 1808), the artist dated the drawings only with the day and month, but even though the diary was broken up prior to the 1903 sale, the efforts of I.H. van Eeghen have permitted its sequence to be largely reconstructed (see I.H. van Eeghen, 'Christiaan Andriessen als 'young man about town',' Maandblad Amstelodamum, 51, 1964, pp. 111-116, and idem, 'In mijn journaal gezet', Amsterdam 1805-1808, het getekende dagboek van Christiaan Andriessen, Alphen aan den Rijn, 1983). The 1903 sale catalogue indicates that the diary originally contained some 690 pages, most of which are still known today. A substantial group is in the Van Eeghen Amsterdam Collection, now in the Gemeentearchief, Amsterdam (see B. Bakker, E. Fleurbaay and A.W. Gerlagh, De verzameling van Eeghen. Amsterdamse tekeningen 1600-1950, Zwolle 1988, pp. 332-352).
