Notes

See note to the previous lot.

The crate of paintings that Andriessen here shows arriving at his father's house in Amsterdam almost certainly contained copies that he himself had made of paintings in the famous Düsseldorf Gallery, which he is known to have visited, in the company of the Leeuwaarden artist Willem Bartel van der Kooi and his pupil, Carel Jacob Baar van Slangenburgh. Andriessen himself wrote in 1840 that this visit had taken place in 1805, but the other two artists both state that it was actually in 1804; since Andriessen's illustrated diary begins on 1 January 1805, and contains no record of a visit to Düsseldorf, it seems likely that the artists did indeed make their journey in 1804. It is therefore also reasonable to conclude that the present drawing dates from September 1805, rather than a later year.
