Item Overview

Description

The apostle St. Matthew, inscribed at upper left S MATTHEIS, oil on panel, 74 x 59 cm, framed, (Wo)

Provenance: private collection, Sweden
Sandrart called Christoph Paudiss a "superb disciple of Rembrandt's". The type of the head as it appeaers in the present work reoccurs several times in Paudiss' oeuvre, that of a Meditating Hermit, an allegory of vanity in Kromeriz Castle in Bohemia, coming closest. The description contained in Werner Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, 1983, vol. IV p. 2314, fig. 1564, fully applies to the present work.
