  Of Irish origin, Count Lacy forged a very successful military career. He left Ireland with his father and uncle after the Treaty of Limerick and joined the regiment of Athlone in the Irish Jacobite Army. Following the disbanding of the Jacobite Army, he found employment in Polish forces, under the command of Charles Eugene, duc de Cröy. He then went on to follow his commander to Russia to serve under Peter the Great. He was made Governor of Livland, a position he held in times of peace until his death in Riga in 1751. His wife, the Estonian-Livonian noblewoman Maret Philippine von Funcken, was known as Martha.
