Description

Circle of Thomas Bardwell (1704-1767); Portrait of Thomas Wilkes, Rector of Pitchford, half length, in clerical robes, with inscription and date centre right "THO: S Wilks D.D.Rr of Pitchford 1712", 73.5 x 61cm, in contemporary silvered oval frame (Illustrated). Thomas was the son of John Wilkes of Newport, Shropshire. He matriculated from Trinity College in 1695-6, became an MA in 1699, a fellow in 1703 and D.D. in 1713. He became Rector of Pitchford in 1712, of Hempstead in Gloucestershire in 1716 and of Rotherfield Gray in Oxfordshire in 1740, until his death on 6th August 1745. Provenance: purchased from Christie's sale at Pitchford Hall near Shrewbury, Shropshire, 28th & 29th September 1992. A copy of the original catalogue accompanies this lot.
