A PAIR OF PAINTINGS BY MKRTIC HOVHANNESI CIVANYAN (TURKISH 1848-1906), A Pair of Paintings: a) "Horses by a Moonlit Lake," oil on carton, 18.5 x 25.5 cm (7 3/8 x 10 1/8 in.) b) "Izba by a Lake," oil on canvas, 29 x 38 cm (11 3/8 x 15 in.), signed lower right. Mrtic Civanyan studied at the Academy of Art in Istanbul under the tutelage of the French painter Pierre Guillemet. In 1874, an encounter with Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, whose work he had long admired, inspired Civanyan to align his oeuvre with that of the great master of marine painting.
