Painted in 1640, this is a major work from Moeyaert's maturity that reflects his re-acquaintance with the stylistic legacy of Lastman and away from his more Rembrandtesque work of the 1630s. At the same time, however, the work retains the quality of light and confidence of handling that typify his oeuvre and that were so to influence his pupils, in particular Nicolaes Berchem and Jan Baptist Weenix.
