Notes

* Provenance - Artist's family collection. Clare Birnberg was an artist who studied at the Slade School 1910-1912, and was a contemporary of David Bomberg and Isaac Rosenberg. She was an early exhibiter at the Whitechapel Art Gallery which opened 8th May 1914 with an exhibition titled 'Twentieth Century Art; A Review of Abstract Movements'. She met and married Samuel Winstein who was a member of the 'Whitechapel Boys' who were a group of well known Jewish artists and writers and active contributors to the Whitechapel Exhibition and others similar which were held in that particular area of London. After their marriage, the couple renounced Judaism and became Quaker Humanists, shortly after Anglicising their name to Winsten. They were neighbours of George Bernard Shaw and Clare Winsten illustrated some of his published works.
