Description

Clark S. Marshall (American, 1862-1944) "Haystacks", oil on board, signed lower left "Clark Marshall" and inscribed verso on frame "Clark S. Marshall Clayton, Del., Painted in 1936, From our Farm looking at St. Josephs Industrial School", 13-1/2" x 19-1/2". Presented in a polychromed wooden frame. A native of Maryland, Marshall became a highly regarded Impressionist landscapist. He studied at the Maryland Institute, College of Art and at the Julian Academy in Paris. Exhibitions of his work included one-man shows at the Peabody Institute in 1918, Baltimore Museum of Art in 1932 and Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Around 1918 he had become a minister, taking charge of congregations in Maryland and in his later years, Delaware. In 1957, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Maryland Historical Society and his art is in the permanent collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art.
