We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for suggesting the attribution to Hoin. Mr Jeffares noted that the composition and subject matter are typical of the artist and that although the light, curling technique used in the woman's hair is close to that of the pastellist Joseph Ducreux, the linear handling of the pastel, seen particularly in the short sharp strokes added to the face, is comparable to other portraits by Hoin, such as the portrait of the young woman sold in New York, Christie's, 23-24 July 2003, lot 247.υ1
