Clement. ca. 1900.This striking, highly decorative poster bothers little with the actual details of the bike, instead opting to emphasize pride of ownership via an allegorical figure (reminiscent of Nike of Samothrace, a famous figure in the Louvre) who holds the laurels won by the machine. Though it was thought to have been anonymously-created until recently, the authorship for this poster has been firmly attached to Foache, a turn-of-the-century artist from the south of France, who worked primarily in Toulouse.
