Figures clés des prémices de la sculpture néoclassique en Italie, les frères Collino ont toujours travaillé et signé conjointement. Après une formation à Rome auprès de Giovanni Battista Maini qui leur fait réaliser des copies d’antiques destinées à la Cour de Savoie, les deux frères rentrent définitivement à Turin où ils exerceront pour la Cour. Ils réalisèrent par exemple le Monument de Charles Emmanuel III à la basilique de Superga en 1786. Notre sculpture en marbre représentant Cléopâtre mourant se rattache directement à une terre cuite attribuée par le Professeur de l’Université de Bologne, Andrea Bacchi, à Ignazio et Filippo Collino. Cette oeuvre constituerait ainsi le modello de notre oeuvre.
Nous retrouvons ici, encore plus marquées que sur la terre cuite, les caractéristiques stylistiques des deux sculpteurs, un classicisme mesuré du visage (comparable à celui de Proserpine signée et conservée au Musée Pavlosk) ainsi que des vêtements parcourus par des plis serrés à l’antique, comme on peut le voir sur la partie postérieure. Chaque détail de la terre cuite a été retranscrit minutieusement dans le marbre, la pose théâtrale du sujet, les drapés du manteau doublé d’hermine ou les bijoux dans les cheveux. Les dimensions, le caractère raffiné du travail et la qualité du marbre suggèrent que cette sculpture a été créée pour être installée dans un intérieur. Le succès des frères Collino repose surtout sur leurs oeuvres en marbre, réalisées en marbre du Pont (Turin) dont les carrières furent rouvertes sur demande des deux artistes pour avoir à disposition un stock important et moins couteux que le marbre de Carrare. Ignazio et Filippo Collino furent les interprètes les plus originaux en Italie de la naissante sculpture néoclassique avant la consécration de Canova.

For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted.
