Church of Vera Cruz

After 1940, Clinton King's art took a new direction. A good friend of Mabel Dodge Luhan and Georgia O'Keefe, King began to feel the "pull" of modernism and abstraction--like many painters of the day--to his previously Regionalist style. He developed a decidedly unique style: spare linear and diagrammatic. It was a style more international than regional and great success is evident in his exhibition record. From 1950 onward his exhibition record includes: Texas Watercolor Society (1955); Salon D'Automne, Paris; and Adler Fielding Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa. One-man show exhibitions: Feragil Art Galleries, New York (1949 and 1950); Galerie de Elysee, Paris (1950 and 1951); Palacio Poz, Lisbon (1953); Galerie D'Art, Paris Casablanca (1953); Fairweather-Hardin Gallery, Chicago (1958); Ohana Gallery, London (1959); Galerie Marigny, Paris (1959 and 1961); William Findlay Gallery, Chicago (1964 and 1965); Chicago Public Library (1966); Brinken Galerie, Stockholm (1966); and Galerie Transposition, Paris (1966).

In King's later works, paint was often applied in dabs directly from the tube. This painting, almost like an x-ray, reveals its very structure--figurative, yet quite abstract.
