A Fishing Boat off the Coast signed 'Colin Hunter' (lower right) oil on canvas 313/4 x 51/4 in. (80.7 x 13.4 cm.) PROVENANCE Painted for Alma-Tadema's house, 17 Grove End Road, St John's Wood; sold Hampton & Sons, London, 11 June 1913, lot 608. C.P. Mason; Sotheby's Belgravia, 5 November 1974, lot 73 (as A Seascape ). with Roy Miles Fine Paintings Ltd, London. Anon. sale, Sotheby's, New York, 12 October 1994, lot 350E as An Afternoon Sail, when acquired by the present owner. LITERATURE R. de Cordova, 'The Panels in Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's Hall', Strand Magazine, vol. XXIV, no. 144, December 1902, p. 623, illustrated as A Seascape. NOTES 'Those who care for Mr Colin Hunter's work', wrote De Cordova, 'will easily recognise his characteristic seapiece, in which the sea is painted with his own masterful knowledge of its ever-varying moods.' The picture was placed two to the right of MacWhirter's Silver Birches (lot 277), with James Archer's Centaurs in between.
