Description

Aquarelle sur traits au crayon gras noir ou fusain, 50,5 x 31 cm, papier pour aquarelle, non signée (mouill. dans le bas de la feuille mais sans dommage visible). - Projet non retenu. Deux femmes de profil dr. sonnent de la corne, un lion assis de profil dr. à leurs pieds, mention "1830-1905" dans le haut, réserve pour le texte en bas à g. - Combaz participa au concours de projets pour l'affiche commémorant le 75e anniversaire du jeune état belge. Il fallait qu'elle mesure 160 x 120 cm et puisse être imprimée sur une feuille. Le jury récompensa conjointement Cassiers et Combaz, précisant que l'affiche du 1er serait placardée dans les gares et la 2e destinée à un carton publicitaire. Mais le règlement fut changé pour favoriser un imprimeur et une impression en 4 feuilles. Combaz, dégoûté, renonça à son prix et rendit l'affaire publique. Il ne renonça cependant pas à son oeuvre et réutilisa deux fois le projet : pour le titre de "Le chansonnier de la jeunesse belge" d'Octave Maus, 1905, et pour la couverture de "L'art appliqué en Belgique" de Th. Quoidbach, 1934. - Réf. J. Block, Gisbert Combaz Fin de siècle Artist, p. 66 (+ p. 99, n° 141-142 pour les réutilisations du projet). - Prov. [Louis Wittamer-De Camps, possesseur de l'une des plus emblématiques collections belges d'affiches Art Nouveau. Propriétaire d'une maison de haute couture, il racheta en 1957 l'ancien hôtel Solvay construit par Victor Horta, avenue Louise, pour y installer ses ateliers].

Auction - Terms of sale

The purchaser shall pay, strictly cash, the hammer price, in €, together with a premium of 25 %, eventually plus the resale tax, if applicable: 4 % for hammer prices from € 2000 on, only for original art and if the author died less than 70 years ago.
The auction follows the order indicated by the catalogue. The biddings start at about 80 % of the lowest estimate and each bid must be +/? 10% higher than the previous one. In case of a dispute the lot will be called again.
The auctioneer has the right to refuse a bid, and this without further explanation.
Each buyer by making a bid acknowledges the conditions of sale and the fact that he has inspected the purchased item.
The auctioneer has the right to split a lot or join several lots.
Lots with two or more titles, series or periodicals, or lots with a mention "n.c." and 'sold w.a.f.'are not collated and cannot be returned.
Each buyer is supposed to buy for his own account and cannot claim any commission. Each bidder should inspect the lots during the exhibition. Under no circumstances can an item, once sold, be returned. For lots bought via a bidding order remarks or complaints, also concerning the authenticity of the items, should be formulated within 2 weeks after the auction. After that delay no item can be returned.
