Painter and ceramicist Georges Rasetti met Ballin, Verkade and Sérusier during the summer of 1891 in Huelgoat. It was through Sérusier that Rasetti met Maurice Denis, who would shortly thereafter introduce him to ceramic-making. In this Concours de peche, the influence of the Pont-Aven painters is clearly present, however the execution remains entirely his own. Figures are delineated not with black but with orange outlines, creating a kind of halo effect. The picturesque subject of this fishing trip, bathed in a shimmering light, is endowed with an almost mystical aura.
