congreve's copy of the first edition of the classic seventeenth-century french treatise on the theatre.

Congreve also owned a copy of the first English translation of this work, published in 1684 (Leeds sale at Sotheby's, 3 June 1930, lot 298; Hodges No. 10). See also lot 293 in the present sale.
