1395. PETER COOPER (1791 - 1883) American manufacturer and philanthropist , designer and builder of the first American locomotive Tom Thumb. He also backed Cyrus Field in laying the trans-Atlantic cable. Manuscript L.S. 1p. 4to., New York, Dec. 1, 1861, to writer Nahum Capen, Esq., in part: "...I return your manuscript by express this evening...I will offer but one suggestion in relation to the section under the head 'Nations are ordained of God'...Nations like individuals act under the influence of inalterable laws, designed in infinite wisdom, for the government of worlds and men. These laws can never be violated or set at naught, either by nations or individuals without a...righteous recompense of reward...". Identifying strip of paper affixed at top, tiny foldtear at right margin, very good. $50 - 75
