Item Overview

Description

The beach at Egmond aan Zee, with three fishermen conversing in the foreground, a fishmonger selling his catch beyond oil on panel 71/2 x 91/4 in. (19 x 23.5 cm.) PROVENANCE With Alfred Brod, London, December 1965. With Gebr. Douwes, Amsterdam, February 1968, acquired by Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. A-30). LITERATURE H.-U. Beck, Knstler um Jan van Goyen, Doornspijk, 1991, p. 31, no. 27. NOTES Known primarily as a painter of beach scenes comparable to the present picture, Beelt was a native of Haarlem whose work was strongly influenced by that of Willem Kool. His beaches are generally populated with numerous figures and frequently depict either, and sometimes both, a fish-seller and a horse and rider, for example the picture in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (inv. no. 1871).
